A major dispute that has gone under the radar of many media platforms is now into a second series of strike action and the organisation where union members are on strike is none other than British Gas.

The media whitewash is another example of how many of the big media outlets are almost scared to report any negative news that could lead to pressure on Boris Johnson and the British Government.

The draconian steps taken by British Gas, which has seen condemnation from across the political spectrum, has seen British Gas engineers fired and then re-hired on lesser terms and conditions. This is a terrible kick in the teeth to a set of front workers who continue to help UK customers, even to the point of going into homes where some customers will have had covid19.

GMB national officer Justin Bowden said: “The strike is stepping up a gear this week with further days of action, with the company apparently disregarding its customers and its obligations. “

British Gas customers have been airing their discontent on consumer forums. One customer who wished to remain anonymous said “There is significant support for the workers and it does not help when my boiler packs up and I am told that no engineer is available for over 2 weeks because of Covid19, when we know there is strike action and a huge backlog of jobs built up.”

British Gas recently announced a profit of over £900 million. Readers of this article will draw their own conclusions.

The GMB have announced a fighting fund for their members – if you would like to support the workers fighting to defend their employment terms and conditions you can make a donation via https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/british-gas-strike-fund
