Europe's fossil-fuel vehicle sales at 30-year low

According to the German national registration data, there were only 762,525 new registrations this year in Europe, the lowest level since 1990, the Duisburg CAR Institute reported on Monday.

The report says the number of new cars fell by 25 percent and car companies confirmed that the worst performance was reported in Spain (51.1 percent fall) and Denmark (45 percent fall).

The proportion of electric vehicles sold in the EU more than trebled in 2020 to reach 10.5 percent for the first time, new figures reveal, a sign that EU and national incentives to stimulate demand for zero-emission cars are bearing fruit.

The EU has set increasingly strict emission standards to encourage automakers to shift resources towards clean vehicles. Under these rules, cars must emit 37.5 percent less CO2 by 2030 compared to 2021, while vans must achieve a 31 percent drop.
