Fed may buy more bonds if needed - Powell

NEWS IN ENGLISH

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell unveiled that Fed remains open to the possibility of either buying more bonds, or purchasing longer-term bonds if that proves to be necessary in order to facilitate the economic recovery from the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We remain open to increasing the size of asset purchases if that turns out to be appropriate," he said during the press conference following the Federal Open Market Committee's meeting, but underlined that he thinks the "current policy stance is appropriate."
"We don't think the economy is suffering from the lack of highly-accommodated financial conditions. We think it's suffering from the pandemic, and from people not wanting to engage in certain economic activities," Powell pointed out.
Asked about green monetary policy and the US' participation in the Network of Central Banks and Supervisors for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), Powell noted it is important for central banks to share best practices on climate change and finance since it is still a topic that is being researched. However, he noted that elected officials will always be the ones to determine climate policy and promised the Fed would remain "transparent" and "careful" on climate.
