United States Treasury Secretary nominee Janet Yellen has stated that she will work overtime for a second coronavirus relief package.

Yellen said on Tuesday that additional financial aid is needed to boost the vaccine distribution in the coming months, as well as to extend unemployment benefits.

The Senate Finance Committee held a nomination hearing for Janet Yellen to Secretary of the Treasury.

"Without a reaction in the form of additional relief, the US is risking prolonged economic recession," Yellen said, urging the government to "act big" in helping people to overcome the coronavirus crisis. She pointed out that her first task would be "keeping people safe while returning them to work," with the second task "rebuilding the country's economy."

Yellen has added that she aims to have a competitive economy that creates jobs. She also notes high-income inequality and promises to focus on the needs of American workers.
