China installs half of new global offshore wind capacity

Global Wind Energy Council published its latest market intelligence report on Thursday, marking China as the leader of annual offshore wind installations for the third consecutive year, as it accounts for over half of new global installations in 2020.

Out of 6 gigawatts (GW) of new global offshore wind capacity in 2020, China installed 3.06 GW to now have a cumulative of a little under 10 GW, only a few points short of the world's biggest holder - the United Kingdom which has over 10.2 GW. The world's total offshore wind capacity stands at around 35 GW.

"Although China was hit first by the COVID-19 crisis, the impacts on the offshore wind sector were minimal, resuming 'business-as-usual' as early as March 2020", GWEC representative Feng Zhao noted, adding that Asia-Pacific region would "play an increasingly important role driving industry growth".
