ECB's Schnabel: Fiscal, monetary policy crucial

NEWS IN ENGLISH

Member of the European Central Bank (ECB) Executive Board Isabel Schnabel stated on Thursday that the fiscal and monetary policy would remain "crucial" in the forthcoming period, given the still ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and that it must not be withdrawn "prematurely."

Schnabel stressed the ECB was "monitoring market developments closely" and working to make sure there was no "unwarranted tightening of financing conditions."
She noted the current lockdowns throughout Europe, imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19, had "less severe consequences than the first one" as the Eurozone was "much better able to deal with lockdowns now."

Schnabel recently remarked the inflation was "not dead" despite the impact the pandemic had had on it and that its current low levels did not mean it "no longer existed."
