The share of online sales in total retail sales worldwide annually soared by three percentage points to 19 percent in 2020, according to a study published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Monday.

The countries which registered the biggest retail share of over 20 percent when it comes to online shopping are South Korea, China and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the global e-commerce sales expanded by 4.0 percent to 26.7 trillion dollars according to UNCTAD's data for 2019.

The figures were widely boosted by the coronavirus-related lockdown measures that were present in some form throughout the whole of 2020, with companies such as Alibaba and Amazon leading the industry.
