Sectoral confidence rises in services, fall in retail, construction

Seasonally adjusted confidence index increased by 2.9 percent in the services sector while decreased by 0.1 percent in the retail trade sector, and 5.2 percent in the construction sector in January on monthly basis, according to the Sectoral Confidence Indices data, released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Monday.

Sectoral confidence indices can take values between 0 and 200. It indicates an optimistic outlook when the index is above 100, but it indicates a pessimistic outlook when it is below 100.


The seasonally adjusted service sector confidence index increased by 2.9 percent from 99 in December 2020 to 101.9 in January 2021. In the service sector, compared to the previous month, the business situation sub-index increased by 5.4 percent in the last three months to 103. In the last three months, the demand for services sub-index increased by 1.4 percent to 98. The sub-index of demand for services in the next three months increased by 2.1 percent to 104.6.


The seasonally adjusted retail trade confidence index decreased by 0.1 percent to 108.5 in January 2021. In the retail trade sector, compared to the previous month, the business volume sales sub-index decreased by 3.7 percent to 118.8 in the last three months. The current level of stock of goods sub-index decreased 1.4 percent to 90.1. In the next three months, the business activity-sales expectation sub-index increased by 4.9 percent to 116.7.


The seasonally adjusted construction confidence index dropped from 88.8 to 84.2, decreasing 5.2 percent in January. In the construction sector, compared to the previous month, the current level of registered orders sub-index decreased by 2.5 percent to 75.7, and the sub-index of total employee expectation in the next three months decreased by 7.4 percent to 92.6. In the construction sector, 46.9 percent of enterprises in January 2021 stated that there were no restrictions on activities, while 53.1 percent stated that there was at least one main factor restricting their activities.
