ECB / Lagarde: Europeans interested in digital euro

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde said on Friday that the bank found that 50 percent of Europeans are interested in a digital euro but noted it is yet to make a decision on whether it will launch such an asset.

Speaking at the European University Institute’s (EUI) State of the Union forum, Lagarde noted she believes a digital euro could be a "lot more inclusive," as well as cheaper, more efficient and faster, but pointed out many technical issues need to be considered before a decision is made on the matter.

The ECB president added that the decision on a digital euro is "too important to be left" to the bank alone and that European governments need to be involved in the decision, due to issues such as privacy. She also stressed that commercial banks have expressed worries over such a digital asset.
