GLOBAL MARKETS-Europe opens higher on new vaccine hopes

Major stock markets in Europe opened higher on Tuesday after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced it had received a request for conditional marketing authorization (CMA) for the vaccine against Covid-19 developed by AstraZeneca PLC and the University of Oxford.

Asian markets traded mixed on Tuesday as investors awaited more details on additional stimulus for the United States economy from incoming President Joe Biden. Following his inauguration on January 20, Biden promised "trillions" of dollars worth of fiscal stimulus to support the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The DAX opened 0.35 percent higher as Infineon Technologies AG advanced by 1.82 percent. The FTSE 100 went up by 0.18 percent, with Kingfisher PLC increasing by 2.83 percent. The CAC rose by 0.24 percent as Total SE grew by 1.34 percent.

The euro stood flat against the dollar, selling for 1.21538 dollars. At the same time, the pound sterling gained 0.22 percent against the greenback to change hands for 1.35500 dollars.

The Nikkei 225 closed 0.09 percent in the green in Tokyo, while the Kospi Composite dropped 0.93 percent. Meanwhile, in China, the Shanghai Composite jumped 1.58 percent as the Shenzhen Composite surged 1.72 percent. The Hang Seng gained 0.87 percent. In Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.27 percent lower. The dollar declined 0.05 percent against the Japanese yen, buying ¥104.229.
