The sacking of Frank Lampard and appointment of Thomas Tuchel

On January 25th 2021, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was sacked as the Blues' head coach after 18 months in charge. The Englishman was replaced by former Paris Saint Germain boss Thomas Tuchel.

After a poor and underachieving start to the 2020/2021 Premier League season, having spent over £200 million on new transfers in the summer transfer window, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, Roman Abramovic, believed that it was time for a change.

It appears that numerous Chelsea fans agree with the sacking of Lampard. However, as seen on social media, many fans think his sacking was unjust and incorrect, as it did not consider the poor performances of the players, most notably Chelsea’s top two summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Hevrtz. They argue that letting go of a club legend after such a short period of time is discourteous and unmannerly.

Frank Lampard was quickly replaced by former PSG manager Thomas Tuchel. The German manager has been sacked by each of his previous two clubs. Nevertheless, he has won seven trophies, the DFB-Pokal (2016-2017), Ligue 1 (2018-2019, 2019-2020), Coupe de France (2019-2020), Coupe de la Ligue (2019-2020) and Trophée des Champions (2018, 2019) whilst reaching the Coupe de France final in 2019 and the prestigious UEFA Champions League final in 2020.

Some critics, on the other hand, think Tuchel’s success was carried by the reputable and world class squads under his management.

In my opinion, sacking Lampard was the correct decision as appointing him in the first place was a mistake. Despite being a legendary former player, he is inexperienced as a manager and was not prepared for the Chelsea job.

Perhaps Lampard needs to prove himself at a few smaller clubs first before he is trusted to manage the league’s top dogs. When he has proven his ability to add quality to a squad that lacks it, maybe then he will be ready to manage a team like Chelsea.
